Grinding stumps below ground level helps prevent the tree from re-sprouting. The grinder’s rotating blade mulches the stump down several inches deep into the soil. Grinding out a stump rarely disturbs more ground than the area of the stump itself. Pulling a stump with a larger machine can disrupt up a large area around the stump and leave a bigger hole to fill in afterward. Some people prefer not not look at the stumps from the trees they had to remove!
