Trees can grow with multiple main stems or branches depending on their environment and species. If the union between them is too tight, the stems can compete. This can result in growth against each other, bark inclusion, and weak points during wind and snow. If left unattended, weather events can cause major sections to fail, potentially requiring full removal of the tree.

 

The best way to mitigate competing stems or poor branch junctions is pruning the tree when it is young. But we understand that doesn't always happen, so we can use other techniques to prevent major failure in more mature trees as well. We have extensive experience using synthetic cable, steel cable, bolting and bracing to support weak unions. We almost always recommend some sort of weight reduction pruning to direct growth toward the most structural sustainability while still providing food and storage to the entire tree.
